Apprenticeship week highlights how taking on an apprentice can help South West firms beat the recession
Taking on an apprentice could be the stimulus to help South West firms emerge successfully from the recession.
That’s the view of Chris Jeffery, a board member of the Association of Learning Providers and council member of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service.
Mrs Jeffery, who is also managing director of Plymouth-based Academy of Training, called on firms to consider taking on an apprentice as ‘a sound piece of business planning."
“This is Apprenticeship Week, and there are lots of events going on around the region to celebrate the talents and skills of apprentices.  Those employers who already take on apprentices know and celebrate the value these young people can bring to a business, and any firm which has hesitated about employing an apprentice should look at the many case studies which exist and which show such a move is a sound piece of business planning.
“There are thousands of young people who just need the chance to show what they can do. They have energy and enthusiasm, and with the training that an apprenticeship gives them they quickly become invaluable.
“In addition there are schemes around which mean not only is the training paid for, but in some cases there is a payment available to a business just for taking a young person on.”
Apprenticeship Week runs from Monday February 1 until Friday February 5 and is organised by the National Apprenticeship Service.

St Mellion International Resort’s Big Thaw Competition postponed due to frost
St Mellion International Resort members missed out on a chance to win a month’s supply of ice cream when a competition designed to celebrate the re-opening of the resort’s golf courses following the winter snow had to be cancelled – due to severe frost.

David Moon, golf operations manager at St Mellion said: “We couldn’t believe it. We’d planned the Big Thaw Competition last weekend as a fun event to allow members a chance to get back into the swing of things following the extreme snowy weather we’d had. To have to postpone it due to frost is just typical!”

The Big Thaw Competition will now take place on Saturday 6 February and is open to all members booked to play on the Kernow Course. It will take the form of a ‘nearest the pin’ competition from the 14th hole. The winner receives a month’s supply of ice cream donated by Langage Farm.

Win a month’s supply of ice cream with St Mellion International Resort’s Big Thaw competition

Just as St Mellion members were getting over their golf being snowed off they have been invited to enter a competition that threatens to send a chill down their spines.

David Moon, Golf Operations Manager at St Mellion explains: “We thought we’d have a bit of a laugh to celebrate the course re-opening and remind members of the recent snowy weather by offering them the chance to win a month’s supply of ice cream kindly donated by Langage Farm.”
The Big Thaw competition will take place on Saturday 30 January and is open to all St Mellion members booked to play on the Kernow Course. It will take the form of a ‘nearest the pin’ competition from the 14th hole.
“The competition presents a challenge to even the most experienced players. The hole we are using is the signature hole of the Kernow Course, the 14th hole, which is a beautiful par 3 measuring 174 yards from the Championship tees.
“During the recent cold snap the lake in front of this hole was completely frozen over and members would have found it more appropriate to wear skis rather than golf shoes but now the ice has melted we’re inviting St Mellion members to come along, warm up and get back into the swing of things for 2010.”
Around 150 members are booked to play and the winner will be announced at the end of the day’s play.

Plymouth MD chairs national Hair and Beauty meeting

Chris Jeffery, managing director of Academy of Training, will be chairing the next Hair & Beauty meeting for the Association of Learning Providers (ALP,) as the Skills Champion for the Hair & Beauty sector, on 27 January.  The meeting will be hosted by Habia at their HQ in Yorkshire (Habia is the standard-setting body for the Hair and Beauty sector).
The Hair and Beauty Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting will include important updates on the new qualifications and apprenticeships frameworks, sector Train to Gain and funding issues, as well as open forum discussions on operational matters. Helen Gorner, employer services director for the Yorkshire & Humber National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) will also provide information on Hair and Beauty participation and success rates across England as well as new services and initiatives for 2010.
Mrs Jeffery said: “Following the successful first Hair & Beauty Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting held at the Wella World Studio in London, during October, I am delighted that Habia will host our next gathering of Hair and Beauty providers and that it has agreed to update members on the key strategic and operational developments that are important to our engagement with learners and employers in 2010. Equally, this meeting provides a good opportunity for members to discuss and share experiences on key matters of delivery.”
Hairdressing was the first established NVQ and Mrs Jeffery was one of the first external verifiers for hairdressing in the country. During her long association with hairdressing and learning provision she has seen many changes and is now enjoying her role as chair and the opportunities to improve communication for all providers.
