Tesco expansion well received in Penzance

Plans to expand the Tesco store in Branwell Lane, Penzance were well received by local residents at a public consultation held over the weekend.
Approximately 1000 people visited the two-day public exhibition on 2 and 3 July which was held at the Tesco store and at the Wharfside Shopping Centre. People were very interested in the proposed plans for the extension and welcomed the prospect of improved stock levels and a wider range of products.
Members of the public have been invited to send in their comments on the proposals and the result will be published in two to three weeks time. Residents in the Isles of Scilly will receive a leaflet with their dotcom shopping in the week following the consultation and leaflets are also available at the Town Hall on St Mary’s.
Tesco’s extension plans will double the size of the current store and improve the service offered to customers, including: a wider range of products, a new café and more car parking spaces. The plans also include a range of environmental features which will reduce the store’s carbon emissions. A further 160 new jobs will be created by the extension plans, in addition to the 225 staff currently employed at the store.

St Mellion hosts Cornwall v Devon greenkeeper showdown
Cornish greenkeepers are rejoicing after winning the Cornwall versus Devon game at the British International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) play-off event for the second year in a row.  The victory took place at St Mellion International Resort on 15 June with Cornwall winning 9-3.

The event involved 70 staff members from golf clubs all over Devon and Cornwall, 44 played a match on the refurbished Nicklaus Course whilst the remaining members of BIGGA embarked on a course walk lead by St Mellion’s course manager Mike Bush who showed visitors the refurbishments and improvements made to the Nicklaus and Kernow courses.

St Mellion’s Kernow course has recently been reopened after extensive work to improve and modernise it.  Many holes have been extended to keep up with the current technology of the game.  The Nicklaus course the members played on is notoriously difficult and is regarded as second only to Carnoustie as the most difficult course in Britain.

BIGGA members celebrated Cornwall’s win with a barbeque in the evening and took the chance to socialise with other green keepers and managers.

Mike Bush said: “The day was superb; everyone loved the course and agreed that it was in great nick, they did find it tough though!  It’s great that we have a championship course at St Mellion for the Devon and Cornwall staff to play on and it was a great social event too, as it is every year.

 “The day was a good opportunity for me to meet everyone and show them the courses.  I also took the chance to recruit volunteers for the English Open next year.  It’s important to promote local greenkeeping talent.”

New rooms at St Mellion offer families more space and privacy
St Mellion International Resort is introducing interconnecting family rooms to its four star accommodation to cater for an increase in demand from visitors to the region.
According to the latest South West Regional Development Agency figures, visitor numbers to the south west are predicted to stay at similarly high levels in 2010 with the proportion of those visitors staying in hotels predicted to rise to 21%.
Amy Roe, sales and marketing manager at St Mellion International Resort, said: “It’s not surprising that our 4-star resort has become such a popular choice for families. St Mellion is a great base for exploring the rest of the region. We’re set in 450 acres of Cornish countryside, only a 20-minute drive from Plymouth Airport and a short drive from the moors and beaches.
“The new rooms give families more space and privacy than they would have sharing a traditional family room with the added benefit of 2 bathrooms.”
St Mellion offers a wide range of packages to accommodate families. Children under twelve staying in the new rooms can go to the kids club or crèche for free and the resort also provides a Junior Academy Summer Club for older children to learn or improve their golf skills. 
Family packages start from £236 a night for the whole family which provides two connected rooms and a full West Country breakfast each.
Amy Roe said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer families such a fully rounded experience – the new rooms and the children’s activities mean that each member of the family is now fully catered for. The younger family members will be kept occupied and the adults can enjoy some space and privacy with full use of our extensive leisure facilities."

Tesco to create 160 new jobs in Penzance
Tesco has announced plans to create 160 new jobs in Penzance, with an extension of its store on Branwell Lane.
The Tesco store on Branwell Lane has become extremely popular with shoppers since it opened in 1996 and is no longer large enough to meet the current demands of customers in the area.
As part of its community consultation, Tesco will be holding a public exhibition in the store on Friday 2 July from 2pm to 7pm and at the Wharfside Shopping Centre on Saturday 3 July from 10am to 3pm, where the proposals to extend the Tesco store will be available for the local community to view and comment on.
Tesco’s plans to extend its current store will improve the service offered to customers, including: a wider range of products and local food, improved product availability, a new café and more car parking spaces. The plans also include a range of environmental features which will reduce the store’s carbon emissions by up to 43%.
Announcing the plans, Tesco corporate affairs manager, Juliette Bishop said: “Our proposals will make a major contribution towards improving the choice and range of goods and services available to consumers in Penzance. We feel that our plans will deliver an improved store for Penzance and help to keep people shopping locally.”
